We have two laptops sitting on our kitchen island. One is obviously newer than the other with the older one being big and heavy and bulky, even though it was purchased just over three years ago. The newer one, purchased this past summer, is shiny and sleek and is the perfect choice to pack away in your bag for blogging on the go. Both computers have screen savers, filled with pictures. Sometimes, in the unusual instant that no one has been using either computer for ten minutes or so, both computers will flash through a series of pictures that is almost like a slide show of our family's history. Even though neither computer is that old, both contain pictures dating way back, and many that are much more recent memories.
I have seen this picture frequently. It is only a year old. Yesterday, as I thought about the context of the snapshot, I was struck by how much had changed since it was taken. The little guy in that picture was just about to say goodbye to his diapers that are sticking out of the top of his PJs. In just over a month after the picture was taken he had become proficient in taking care of business on the toilet. And now, a year later, he is a potty pro. But, it is not so much about the success of toilet training, but it is about the huge leaps and bounds that occurred between the age of 2 1/2 and 3 1/2. He has started preschool. He knows most of his letters and their sounds. He tells us jokes. He terrorizes his big brother. He can burp on command and told us the other day "Hey Dad! I can burp my ABC's!" and then proceeded to make it through the letter "G." He is no longer the "baby" that was photographed last Christmas.
For sure, he still has his baby moments. He still loves his blankies and his stuffed triceratops. He still likes to stop using his words and use baby grunts with his Grammy. He still tells his mommy "mommy, I need you," and then crawls into my lap. He is still uncertain in new situations. But, more and more he is becoming the "big kid" that he tells me every day that he is. And little by little he is leaving the baby behind

amazing how much changes and how quickly.
Oh, wow! You really can see the transformation between those two pictures!
Good for him for working so studiously with his markers. Maybe he will avoid the pitfall of disastrous handwriting that most boys seem to fall into (my two included). I should have forced more markers and scissors into their hands when they were his age!
He's a doll.
They break you heart and make you so proud when they grow. Parenthood is one big contradiction.
There is a HUGE leap between those ages...it is a bit more pronounced with KayTar because she lagged so far behind a year ago, but this age in general is a big transition.
That is huge change in such a short time! He is such a lovely boy, what great concentration in that shot.
